Fiery Struggle: Illinois Fire Fighters Build a Union, 1901-1985 - Michael G. Matejka
Mike Matejka of Bloomington, Illinois has produced a splendid book about the fire fighters and their struggle for union recognition in towns large and small. Mike's interest was piqued in 1977 when the striking fire fighters of Normal were arrested and jailed in their own firehouse. Not a collection of stories about great fires, this is an account of the quest for collective bargaining by public servants who found their way to success through job actions and political maneuver. This story surely resonates in today's climate of budget battles and service cutbacks. Illustrated with 85 photos. (8-1/2x11; 232pp)
